Why are they called poison rings? A very, very long time ago, the rings were used to store poison – at least, that's what is claimed. The rings originated in ancient India and the Far East, and "drifted over" to Europe. The ancient Romans indeed used the ring to store poison. When they could no longer escape a painful death, they could quickly commit suicide this way. Fortunately, the purpose of the rings changed to something more beautiful: during the Middle Ages, the rings were used to store sacred relics to protect the wearer. Later, they were also used to carry small portraits, notes, or, for example, a lock of a loved one's hair. Anyway, do with it what you will, although a piece of history of such a piece of jewellery is incredibly interesting!
