Bali hoops are the well-known small hoop earrings. These earrings are also called sleeper earrings because you can keep them in while you sleep without discomfort. No protruding posts poking you in the neck—bliss! These hoops are often worn for days, weeks, or even months at a time. But okay, admittedly: that might not just be because they are so comfortable to wear, but also because it can be quite a hassle to put them in properly. Time for some tips!
Attaching Bali Hoops
The hoops always have the same type of clasp: a thin, slightly bent post that goes through your earlobe or piercing, and a hollow tube into which that post fits on the other side. Once they're in, they are very secure, but first, you have to get them closed! Because the hoops are often very small, you usually can't get a good grip on the post. My best trick is this: place the center of your index finger's tip against the hollow tube, then slowly bend the earring closed along the tip of your index finger. This way, by slightly bending your index finger, you can guide the post towards the hollow tube.
Find the most space
Because piercings are often in tight spots, it becomes even more difficult to properly close the earrings. In terms of design, Bali hoops don't really have a front or back, so why not turn them around? This way, you have more space to get a good grip on the earring, AND you can clearly see what you're doing in a mirror!
Practice! (or not)
As always: practice makes perfect. Don't give up immediately if it doesn't work; put the earrings down, do something else for a bit, and try again later. You'll get it eventually! If you don't have enough patience, just ask someone else to help you and use the tips above. (I've regularly helped many people put in Bali hoops at markets and in shops; sellers are happy to help too, haha). Was it a big hassle to get them in, but did you finally succeed? Then you can just wear them for a long time and do everything with them: those earrings won't fall out easily!
Taking the hoops out is much easier: hold the hollow tube at the clasp, and with your other hand, flip the post up at the hinge (on the other side of your earlobe/piercing).
